West Ham will support Kalvin Phillips after fan incident – David Moyes

By Ben Burrows

David Moyes says West Ham United will support Kalvin Phillips following an incident with a supporter after the defeat at Newcastle United on Saturday.

Phillips, 28, was filmed showing his middle finger to the fan after being called “useless” as he was boarding the team bus.

The England international had earlier been involved in a contentious penalty awarded against West Ham which helped spark the 4-3 comeback win for the hosts.

The club have declined to comment on the incident.

Moyes says West Ham will continue to help Phillips — who is on loan from Manchester City for the remainder of the season — and called on supporters to get behind him.

“Kalvin’s a human being and what he needs is support and people to help him, which is what we’ll do,” Moyes said. “We need our fans to give all our players the support they require.

“Kalvin’s a really good player and I do believe we can still make something out of the time we’ve got with him here.”

Seventh-placed West Ham face London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night but will do so without first-choice goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, who was forced off with injury at St James’ Park.

“Alphonse Areola has hurt his groin so at the moment it looks like he’s going to be out for a little bit,” he said. “We hope it’s not too serious but Lukasz Fabianski will come in.

“Nayef Aguerd’s trained today so we’ll see how he and everyone else is before tomorrow.”

West Ham’s Onana Pursuit Faces Price Tag Hurdle

West Ham United’s hopes of landing midfielder Amadou Onana this summer have been met with a potentially prohibitive price tag. According to various stories on the internet, Everton has slapped a £60 million valuation on the 22-year-old Belgian.

This represents a significant hike from the £30 million Everton paid to acquire Onana from Lille just last summer. The inflated price tag reflects Everton’s belief that Onana’s value has doubled in his first year at the club.

West Ham were reportedly the frontrunners to sign Onana in 2022 before the deal fell through. With their misfiring loan signing Kalvin Phillips set to return to Manchester City, the Hammers are once again in the market for a central midfielder.

However, Everton’s current relegation battle adds another layer of complexity to potential transfer negotiations. The Toffees’ precarious league position might make them hesitant to sell a key player, especially for anything less than their desired price.

Everton are suggesting a valuation of £60-70 million which despite Onana’s talent and future potential is still well over the odds despite the inflated transfer market, where clubs are increasingly paying over the odds for players.

West Ham must now weigh Onana’s talent and potential against the hefty price tag. The Hammers will also need to consider the uncertainty surrounding Everton’s Premier League status before making a final decision on pursuing this transfer target.
